All right, so I am writing a blog post after a long time. I didn’t write one because nothing significant has been happening in the browser world except for the change in version numbers everyday (all right, I know I am exaggerating) but there were days when a new version of the browser was released it made huge news. Remember when Firefox 3 and Firefox 4 were released? Remember when IE 8 was released? These days no one seems to care and that’s really sad.

Today I am writing this post because Firefox 7 was released a couple of days back. It looks the same as the previous version? Yes, it does. Indeed. But there are a few changes that sets it apart from Firefox 5 and 6 which should have been more like Firefox 4.1 and 4.2. Firefox 7 is blazing fast and is currently best browser in the world. Want proof? Here you go.

Firefox Logo

What’s New in Firefox 7?

Speed, speed, speed…
Agreed it is not faster than Chrome but it is no less either. It is the best browser around with great graphics rendering and HTML 5 support (if you don’t know what HTML 5 is all about, in short, it is what that will make the web pages of the future look great and it is still in an early stage and not yet widely adopted.)

Memory Management:
I have used Firefox ever since its 2.0 days and ever since I am a surfaholic. I have always loved Firefox and will alway do but there were times when I found Firefox to be sluggish and not friends with the memory on my laptop but Firefox 7 is just amazing. You should try it.

Start Up:
Faster start up time means you can go online faster when you boot up. Firefox 7 is indeed faster if not significant than Firefox 6 when you have a lot of tabs saved and you have the tabs grouped in Panorama.

A Little Update.
For those who have updated to FF7, you would have noticed that your addons are missing. Fear not, they were just hidden away due to a bug than Mozilla grouped under the category ‘rare.’ They have released Firefox 7.0.1 and it is just a small patch. Once you are updated, you will be able to see all the addons.

SECURITY ALERT:
Download Firefox from Mozilla.org and don’t download it from any other website. Sites like Firefox7.org show up on the top results and people suspect that it may carry malware. So don’t download it and later complain that Firefox is a virus. Firefox will and always remain free and open source and unlike Chrome or Internet Explorer, Mozilla is a people’s product and YOU are their main priority and they will respect and your PRIVACY.

Ever since the release of Firefox 4, Firefox has adopted the rapid release cycle. Seems like it was only yesterday Firefox 5 was released and Firefox 6 is already here, not to forget Firefox 7 in Beta and Firefox 8 is Aurora.

There’s nothing much new in Firefox 6, at least not for the layman. There are a few security updates and stability updates and the speed is more or less the same. However there are two features that are “visible” to the end user. Check them out.

Domain Highlighter:

Although this feature is available on other browsers, this is new to Firefox. See how the domain has been highlighted and other parts of the URL have been grayed out.

Type about:permissions in the awesome bar (or URL bar as you want to call it) This gives you complete control over cookies, location sharing, password saving, etc.

If you want a much better Firefox, head to the Firefox website and download the Firefox 7 which is still in beta but download it at your own risk. Firefox 7 is really impressive and I bet you will be impressed at how light (no, it doesn’t hog memory at all!) and fast it is. Try it out if you really want to :)

Here comes Firefox 4(after a long, really long wait) and there goes Firefox 4. Make way for Firefox 5. Wait! There’s Firefox 6 right behind and Firefox 7 is performing so good, it puts the current browsers to shame.

What’s up Mozilla? The sleeping T-Rex in you finally woke up and started running after Chromeboy. Did you just realize Chromeboy won’t take a second place in terms of speed?

Firefox Logo

What’s worse?

Chromeboy wants to be the first software to hit the version 50 and version 100 and that’s giving you nightmares?

Where does it get even worse?
You are trying to follow Chromeboy wherever he goes.

When was the last time anyone even noticed a “visual” change in Google Chrome? Chrome fanboys, this is one question even you will find it hard to answer (well they removed the Chrome logo off the browser just recently, fine, fine.)

Firefox is the darling of millions of users out there and they don’t care how fast Chrome is, given that Firefox is just as fast now. Following Chrome blindly will just lead Mozilla right into a quicksand. Google will hardly be affected even if it kills Chrome, as for Mozilla, Firefox is the stage that it is dancing on!

Now that you have downloaded Firefox 4, it is time that you configured it by using a few add-ons and a few tweaks. Before you proceed here are the new features that Firefox 4 has to offer, just in case you don’t know.

Some of the tweaks are old and have been used in Firefox 3.x but chances are high that you might not know it. Check out the following video:

Firefox 4 Compatible Add-ons: (You don’t have to be careful while you install the following add-ons. You can go ahead and install them as they have been downloaded by millions of users!)

I have listed a few add-ons that are common for everyone to have a really great browsing experience.

1) Ad-Block Plus: Blocks all the ads on Google, Facebook, and other top sites giving you a better browsing experience.

2) Better Privacy: Gets rid of all those cookies that track your activities.

3) NoScript: Afraid of harmful scripts harming your computer. Install this and leave the headache to NoScript.

4) Session Manager: If you want to save your tabs and access them later, session manager helps you do that very easily. Give it a shot.

5) Twitter Bar: Tweet right from the awesome bar where you enter your URL.

A really quick review:

Firefox 4 vs Internet Explorer 9 vs Opera 11 vs Chrome 10. Which one is for you?

Firefox 4 – If you are an add-ons craze. Almost all the websites are rendered well by FF4. Ex-Firefox fans, time to return. No one tried to hack this browser at Pwn2Own because it is so good.

Google Chrome 10 – Really fast. People still go to Firefox or Internet Explorer when they cannot view the page properly. No one tried to hack this browser at Pwn2Own because it is so good.

Internet Explorer 9 – Fastest of the pack but no add-ons. It works only on Windows 7 and Windows Vista and that sucks.

Opera 11 – Uses very low memory and gives the aforementioned browsers a run for their money.

Now for a detailed review:

New Features: Firefox 4 wins! Check this out!

Speed: According to the official Sun JavaScript benchmark test, IE9 wins, closely followed by Firefox 4 and Chrome (these results keep changing) but in the real world scenario all the four browsers are head-on and when you are using a fast connection you just won’t notice the speed difference.

Screen Real-Estate: IE9 wins this category but then the space to accommodate too many tabs is a big drawback faced by IE9.

Performance: IE 9 wins, followed by Chrome, Firefox and Opera in a tie.

Start-Up Speed: Chrome and Opera are very closely tied. In real world, you will not notice the little differences in start-up time between these two browsers. They are closely followed by IE 9 and Firefox 4.

Light on Memory: Opera 11 is really light. If you are low on memory (512 MB RAM) Opera is the best for you.

Compatibility: Firefox 4 wins. There are websites that the other browsers do not render properly. If you want to see all the websites in a proper way, no other browser is better than Firefox 4.

Overall Verdict: It is up to your needs and how much you browser. Personally I use Firefox 4 with the FxChrome theme that makes my Firefox 4 look like  Chrome.

Best Browser without Add-ons: Internet Explorer 9 is a clear winner.

Best Browser for a Developer: Firefox 4 is miles ahead of any other browser on the planet.

Is Internet Explorer 9 the new Internet Explorer 6? *cringes*

Internet Explorer 9 (I will be referring to it as IE 9 hereafter, in this post) is indeed the winner of the Sun Spider JavaScript and currently one of the fastest browsers on the planet but is it really worth upgrading?

The Good of IE9.

IE 9 is blazing fast and is the best browser out there that offers hardware acceleration. You can pin each tab independently. To do this try dragging a tab to the taskbar and then drop it. This way you don’t have to launch a browser to open the favorite site that you have pinned. For YouTube lovers, you can now drag the video out of the browser window and this is a great feature.

The Bad of IE9.

It runs only on Windows Vista and Windows 7. It is not supported on Windows XP and that is a really bad news as there are millions of Windows XP users out there. But then they can you can go for Firefox 4 (that is supported even in Windows NT) or Chrome or Opera. You can find out which browser suits for you here.

The Ugly of IE9.

With a browser share of more than 60% IE is most popular browser ever. It is because Windows is the most widely used Operating System and IE is shipped with every system. Therefore in the PCs installed post IE 9 release, will be IE9. As a developer you will hate this browser.

Firefox 4 is already blazing fast.  However there are a few add-ons and tweaks (not many know about it) that will make your Firefox look better and make it faster. Please be careful when you change the settings as they might be risky if you are not careful.

Firefox 4 is the latest browser from Mozilla and is all set to release on March 22 (hopefully.)

Since I am using the FxChrome theme, the appearance of my Firefox will be different that yours if you are using the default theme but this will not change the functionality and performance of your Firefox 4.
